Built Environment Determinants of Pedestrian Activities and Their Consideration in Urban Street Design

Pedestrian facilities have been regarded in urban street design as “leftover spaces” for years, but, currently, there is a growing interest walking and improving the quality of environments. Designing pedestrian presents challenge simultaneously accommodating (1) pedestrians who want to move safely comfortably from point A B (movement function); well (2) users wish rest, communicate, shop, eat, enjoy life pleasant environment (place function). The aims this study are provide an overview how task designing addressed international guidance material design, compare with scientific evidence on determinants activities, finally develop recommendations advancing provisions pedestrians. results show that advanced measuring space requirements known volumes moving pedestrians, but less planning environments encourage movement place activities. stronger linkage could improve materials better support designers their ambition safe, comfortable attractive spaces invite people walk stay.
